Using Alternate Languages in Home Access Center

Home Access Center (HAC) includes an alternate language feature that enables students and guardians to view HAC pages and pop-up windows in a language other than English. You can translate the labels and messages that display in Home Access Center. However, the student data is not translated.

HAC uses a language for a guardian or student based on the following:

  • To turn on the language feature for guardians and students, the Use HAC Language Translation boxes must be checked in the Home Access Center District Configuration page's Guardians and Students tabs.
  • A guardian's or student's default language is the Language of Correspondence selected in the guardian's Contact Detail page or the student's Student Addresses page in eSchoolPlus.
  • If a Language of Correspondence is not selected, the system uses the default language specified in the Home Access Center District Configuration page's Guardians or Students tab.
  • If a default language is not selected in the above pages, then HAC uses the English translation provided by PowerSchool.

The following eSchoolPlus pages and window enable you to set up translations for HAC languages. The numbering indicates the order in which these pages should be used.

  1. Validation Tables Page: Registration's Languages Table
Path: Administration > General Setup > District > Validation Tables, then select Registration as the Application and Languages as the table
The page is used to create a record for a language. To enable the language to be used for HAC translations, select the Active and HAC Languages checkboxes in the table record.
  2. HAC District Configuration Page
Path: Administration > HAC Setup > Setup > HAC District Configuration
The page includes Use HAC Language Translation checkboxes for guardians and students to enable the HAC language translation feature. The page also allows you to select the default languages to use for guardians and students. In addition, from the page's Translations panel, you can access the HAC District Configuration - Alternate Language page for entering translations for a selected language. For more information, refer to HAC District Configuration Page.
  3. HAC District Configuration - Alternate Language Page
Path: Administration > HAC Setup > Setup > HAC District Configuration, then click a Language link on the Translations panel
The page provides panels for translating the text that displays in pages and pop-up windows in HAC. The sections within a panel, include a field showing the English text that needs to be translated and a blank field for entering the translation. As you complete and save a panel's translations, the Complete message on the panel's title bar changes from No to Yes. Once all of the panels are set to Yes, the language can be used in HAC. For more information, refer to HAC District Configuration - Alternate Language Page.
  4. Copy from Default Language Window
Path: Administration > HAC Setup > Setup > HAC District Configuration, then click a Language link on the Translations panel > click Copy on the Alternate Language page
The window enables you to copy an existing language translation. Selecting and saving a language in this window populates the fields on the HAC District Configuration - Alternate Language page with the translated text. You can then modify the translations as needed.
