What Is a Gradebook Category Type?

Your building may use Gradebook category types to define the categories and average rules for Gradebook. Category types allow the building to:

  • Select the categories that your course uses.
  • Specify the weight for the category.
  • Define the drop lowest and exclude missing rules for the category. You may be able to change these settings if your building has selected to not limit your access to these settings.
  • Indicate that a category is weighted differently in some marking periods.
  • Define overrides for IPR marks. The override for a mark will determine which categories are included in the average for the mark and the weight of the categories.
  • Define overrides for Report Card marks that are calculated based on assignment scores. The override for a mark will determine which categories are included in the average for the mark and the weight of the categories.
  • Define the drop lowest and exclude missing rules for a mark. You may be able to change these settings, if your building has not selected to limit your access to these settings.

If your course-section has been assigned a category type, then the Categories, IPR Averages, and Report Card Averages tabs on the Gradebook Setup page will display the defined setup. You may be able to change the drop lowest or exclude missing rules for categories and marks, but you cannot change the categories or weights selected.
