Rubric Setup Page
On this page:
Use this page to create and review public rubrics that your district's teachers can link to their assignments in Teacher Access Center (TAC).
Note
TAC allows teachers to define two types of rubrics: Simple and Full. Only full rubrics can be created as public rubrics. To learn more about assignment rubrics, refer to the Overview of Rubrics topic.
You can associate standards-based competencies with the various assessment criteria in the rubric. However, note that this is only useful for teachers if the competencies are valid for the course or student competency group that the teacher is grading for the assignment.
View rubrics
- Select Administration > Mark Reporting Setup > Gradebook Setup > Rubrics.
- If needed, enter criteria on the search page for a Simple or Advanced Search, and then click Load.
- On the Search Results panel, click the rubric's link.
Add rubrics
- Select Administration > Mark Reporting Setup > Gradebook Setup > Rubrics.

Then enter the maximum number of points for the assignment in the Rubric Detail panel's Assignment Points field. The rightmost performance level's scores will be set to the total assignment points you entered. Make sure you enter scores for the other performance levels. - To define a rubric where the criteria scores will be summed to calculate an assignment's score, select the Sum option in the General panel's Assignment Points field.
Enter the score for each criteria for the performance level. The sum of the scores entered in the rightmost performance level will display as the total in the Rubric Detail panel's Assignment Points field.

- If you are the Author for a rubric that is not linked to scored assignments in TAC, you can update any of the rubric's fields except for the Rubric Code.
- If TAC assignment scores are entered for the rubric, you can update only the Active setting and performance level descriptive text for the rubric criteria.

- Select Administration > Mark Reporting Setup > Gradebook Setup > Rubrics.
- If needed, enter criteria on the search page for a Simple or Advanced Search, and then click Load.
- On the Search Results panel, click the rubric's link.

Fields
General Panel
Field | Description |
---|---|
Rubric Code | Unique code identifying the rubric. Character/20 |
Description | Text to describe the rubric. Since this is a public rubric, make sure the title explains the rubric's purpose so teachers know when they might want to use it. Character/255 |
Active | Checked if the public rubric is active and available for teachers. Uncheck this box to prevent further linking of assignments to the rubric. Once a rubric has been used, it cannot be made inactive. Note that the teacher's TAC Building Configuration determines whether the teachers in a building can access public rubrics. |
Number of Performance Levels | Number of performance levels needed for this rubric. For example, if the rubric should have levels for Needs Improvement, Proficient, and Advanced, you would enter 3. Integer |
Number of Criteria | Number of criteria defined for this rubric. For example, if the rubric for an English paper assignment should have criteria for Grammar Usage, Thesis, and References, you would enter 3. Integer |
Assignment Points | Determines how the total score for the assignment will be calculated based on the student's rubric scores. Select: Average - to average the scores of each criterion to calculate the student's assignment score. Each criterion carries equal weight. |
Rubric Detail Panel
Use these fields to define the details of the rubric.
Field | Description |
---|---|
Performance Level Label (unlabeled) | Text for the performance level's column heading. For example, the performance levels for a rubric that measures proficiency might be Needs Improvement, Proficient, and Advanced. Character/20 This field displays at the top of each performance level column. Enter performance levels in order from lowest to highest performance. The rightmost performance level is considered the highest possible score for a criteria. |
Criteria Label (Unlabeled) | Text for the criteria row's heading. For example, a criterion for an English paper might be Grammar Usage. Character/20 This field displays in the first column for each criteria row. |
Score | High score for the criterion's performance level. Decimal/10,2 The scores entered for performance levels define the rubric criterion's score thresholds for each level. For example, if scores of 0-5 indicate that the student should be in the first performance level, enter 5 for the leftmost performance level. The low score for the next performance level is 6. The General panel's Assignment Points field determines how score values are entered:
|
Description of Performance for Criteria (Unlabeled) | Text describing the performance for the criterion at each performance level. For example, for the Proficient performance level for the Grammar Usage criterion, the text might be Understands and applies most grammar rules. Character/255 This field displays below the score field for each performance level and criteria. |
Competency Group | To associate a competency with the rubric criteria, search for a competency by clicking Search. You can enter part of the competency group's code or leave it blank. Then use the Competency Search window to search for and select the competency. After you have selected the competency, click OK to close the window and return the competency. The student score entered for this criteria will be included as a score for the competency. If competencies are linked to the rubric, then teachers will only be able to copy the competencies into their assignment if the course or student competency group is set up to include the rubric's competencies. |
Competency Description | The description of the competency selected using the Competency Search window. |
State Standard | The state standard for the competency selected using the Competency Search window. |
(Total) Assignment Points | Total points for the assignment. The General panel's Assignment Points field determines how this value is entered:
