Enter Student Competency Marks and Comments

Competency Entry allows you to enter marks and comments for student competencies. You can work in a competency grid of all students or a competency list for a single student. To enter marks from a view that is focused on a single student and provides the prior marking period marks, use List mode.

If you use Load from Gradebook to calculate and load marks, you should only enter a mark value on this page if you do not want to have the student's mark calculated. Manually entering a mark value on the Competency Entry page is considered a mark override and the Load from Gradebook will not overwrite the mark.

Enter competency information for all students in Grid mode

  1. From Grade Reporting, click Competencies to display the Competency Entry page.

  2. To update the student competency group or marking period, click Change, and make your selections.

  3. If Competency Entry is currently in List mode, click

    .

  4. Enter the appropriate marks or comments for students.

  5. Click Save.

Enter competency information for a student in List mode

The List mode allows you to view marks and comments from prior marking periods as a reference. You can choose to hide or show the prior marking periods.

  1. From Grade Reporting, click Competencies to display the Competency Entry page.
  2. To update the student competency group or marking period, click Change, and make your selections.
  3. If Competency Entry is currently in Grid mode, click

  4. Select the student to view by clicking on the student's row or use the arrow buttons next to the student name above the list to move forward or backward through the list.
  5. Enter the appropriate marks or comments for the student.
  6. When you have finished, click Save.
  7. Select the next student and enter marks.

Enter Free Text Comments for students

Use this procedure to enter free text comments on the student's progress in the marking period. These comments, which apply to all student competencies and not just the current ones, appear on the student's report card.

  1. On the Competency Entry page, click on the row for the student you want to enter a comment for.
  2. Click Add Comment icon.
  3. On the Free Text Comment window, enter your comments.
  4. To include standardized phrases within your comments, double-click in the Phrase Picker field above the text box. Then select the desired phrase.
    • If the phrase includes the variable #FIRSTNAME#, #LASTNAME#, #MIDDLENAME#, or #GENERATION#, the appropriate part of the student's name will display in place of the variable in the Free Text Comment window and in turn, on the report card itself.
    • If the phrase includes text in the format of #MM/FF#, then the text before the / (slash) will display for male students and the text after / (slash) will display for female students. For example, the variable #He/She# would return He for a male student and She for a female student.
  5. Click Save.
  6. To add comments for another student, repeat steps 1-5.
